Why the mind races at night

For a lot of people, the day's quietest moment is also the loudest. The lights go off, the to-do list stops, and suddenly every unresolved conversation and tomorrow's worries arrive all at once. If this is you, it doesn't mean something is wrong with you. A busy, anxious mind at bedtime is extremely common — and there are gentle things that genuinely help.

During the day we're occupied, so anxious thoughts get crowded out. At night there's finally space, and the mind uses it to try to ‘solve’ everything. The problem is that 11pm is the worst possible time to problem-solve, because the thinking tends to loop rather than lead anywhere.

A few practices that help

1. Give worries a home before bed

Keep a notebook by the bed. Twenty minutes before sleep, write down what's on your mind and, next to each worry, one small thing you could do about it tomorrow. You're not solving it now — you're telling your brain it's safe to let go until morning.

2. Slow the breath, slow the mind

Try breathing in for a count of four and out for a count of six. A longer out-breath gently signals to your nervous system that it's safe to settle. Even a few minutes can take the edge off.

3. Get out of bed if sleep won't come

If you've been lying awake for a while, it can help to get up, sit somewhere calm with low light, and do something undemanding until you feel sleepy. This keeps your bed associated with rest rather than with worrying.

Rest isn't something you force. It's something you make room for.

Be gentle with yourself

One of the quiet traps of night-time anxiety is getting anxious about being anxious — ‘I have to sleep or tomorrow will be ruined.’ If you can meet a wakeful night with a little more kindness and a little less pressure, you often take away the very fuel the worry was running on.

If anxious nights have become a regular pattern and they're affecting how you feel during the day, it may be worth talking to someone. Individual counselling offers a space to understand what's keeping your mind so busy and to build tools that fit your life.
